For those of us in the southern hemisphere winter is here. It's been pretty chilly lately so we thought we'd remind everyone of some tricks for making sure your aircraft starts on frosty mornings. The attached list are our suggestions but let us know what works for you!

My engine (3300) is hard to start when cold (Almost impossible when very cold) I decided to remove the start mechanism with the view of enlarging the hole to the recommended 1.2 mm , I am unsure which hole needs enlarging.
The first thing I noticed is the rotating plate only has one hole ,I understood it should have 3 of varying sizes.
My question is should I have 3 holes (The dimples are there , where the holes should be as you can see in the photo)
and which hole should be 1.2 mm?

Cheers Adrian Clout

Hi Adrian,
I think, looking at your picture, that you've removed the choke rotating assembly from the side of the carby. We don't adjust anything in that area.

If you look at the second page of the checklist you'll see that the jet we're talking about is down in the bottom of the float bowl assembly - that's where the start enrich circuit draws its fuel from. So to check the jet size you just have to remove the float bowl and use a drill to see what size the bore of the jet is.

Regards,
Doug.

Thanks very much Doug, yes you are correct I had the plate off thinking the hole I had to enlarge was in there. I have since found the jet
in the float bowl and enlarged it to 1.18 mm (The closest drill I had) I am confident this will solve my problem. Sorry to wast your time.
The good news is I now have a full understanding of how the start circuit works.

For 13 years now, I've plugged in a small solar charge panel (80-120mah?) to my battery and leave it on the cowl. Hangar has opaque skylight panels. My location gets down to below freezing in winter. I have never experienced a starting problem and have not done anything extra to help it along. First battery was changed at eight years, but still starting perfectly well when I changed it. I'm convinced that the solar charger keeps the battery UP and aids battery life.

Totally agree Norm , I have been doing the same . I have just put a new battery in my Sonex 3300 after 12 years of faithful service.
I do it on and off with my car batteries. My best was 10 years but shock vibration is greater in a car and a killer of lead acid batteries.

So I am about to give up on finding this Unicorn that everyone says is a must have for the Jabiru engines ....as I can find all kind of references and glowing reviews about the cold start kit ,but cannot find anyone to sell me one.

At this point, I literally have decided to sell the airplane (probably a pipe dream since it won’t start when prospective buyers come to see it) if I can’t locate a cold start kit in the next week or two......I have a Arion Lightning w/Jabiru 3300 and even when it is 55 degrees Fahrenheit and SUNNY it won’t start without the block heater plugged in .....it’s gotta be 60+ F (and even then is unlikely without block heater).  Once it gets below 45-50 F ....even the block heater isn’t enough ...I have to pay to have airport preheater brought over and start, and then it just leaves me stranded at the airport I go to .....that doesn’t have a heated hangar or pre-heater .....so essentially the airplane is useless 6 months outta the year.

It either fires up in the first revolution .....Or I’m DONE ...and it won’t start.  If it doesn’t, I assume it then floods itself because at that point I have to wait 10 min or so before I can even hope to start it with another attempt.

I’ve read every single post on the internet about this, so yes I’m hold the choke out, yes I’ve verified it is fully open when out, yes I’ve verified battery *(it doesn’t matter if I hook up a 200 amp jump box to it, same result), yes I’ve verified the RPM is set low enough (practically maybe a touch two low), and so on ......

I truly am just gonna give up soon, so any help would be excellent.  I live in SE Ohio, so we get a lot of 10-35 degree F days in winter, and there is NO STARTING it without a preheater (the big one on the trailer...not the plug in block heater....it has that .....even if I ALSO RUN and stick a hairdryer up in there that’s 2000W with the block heater ...it’s at best a 50/50 chance).

Please help....the airplane is useless currently.

Hello,

At Jabiru here we are making and supplying  cold start kits all the time.  Have you asked Arion about ordering one?  They are our US dealer for engines.  Also what colour is your starter motor, there is 2 options, black or silver?

@jabiru-support

This is what I asked in my similar post. I spoke with Arion and they said they don't sell the Jabiru cold start kit because it "doesn't work." As I said, my research found to the contrary. Can you sell this direct to the US?

Thanks,

Alex R-
