Hello. I read in the manual that I should not apply full power before the oil temperature is >40 deg C. Does this mean I can take off already at this temperature? My temperature gauge starts at 50 deg C and so far I have waited until >60 deg C before full power and take off (habit from previously flying with Rotax 912). This means on an average day in Denmark up to 10 minutes warm up before I can take off. Maybe it would be better for the engine to have less ground run and more in-air run? So engine check and take off as soon as I can see the temperature indicator starts moving?
Does Jabiru have an opinion about oil thermostats? Can it secure a faster engine warm up?

Hi Olav,

At low temperatures some oils can be prone to cavitation in the oil pump which causes pressure spikes and can damage the oil cooler. Once the oil has warmed to about 40C, especially if you're using multigrade oil, this won't happen and so you can apply full power.

Too much ground running isn't a great idea, so once you're seeing a reading on your gauge you'll be fine to take-off.

We don't have a factory thermostat option though there are a number of options for non-certified models out there. They're more an in-flight thing in my experience: they don't help much with warm-up time.

Regards,
Doug.

Thanks for the answer. I will take off a bit earlier from now on.
