My VDO oil temperature gauge is unreliable - doesn't indicate then goes to full deflection and then bounces around. Any thoughts? Maybe a new sender needed?

The most likely culprit is the sender but it is also worthwhile checking the wire from the gauge to the sender for damage.

Now replaced the sender, still dodgy - now to look at the wire. Tapping the gauge causes deflection so might be the connection to the gauge
