Dear Doug:

I want to tell you what happens to the operation of my Jabiru 2200 engine (SN 3437) in Buenos Aires, Argentina:
Fuel consumption MOGAS Shell 98 octane, 17 L/h.
Japanese NGK D9EA spark plugs.
After 10 hours of use, same spark plug will be short-circuited. I check this with a tester that indicates continuity between the central electrode and ground.
On the last occasion both spark plugs of cylinder # 4 failed. In other opportunity, other S. plugs also failed, isolated from other cylinders.
The CHT temperature never exceeded 300 F. Maxima RPM in takeoff 3000. Cruiser 2800.
Propeller Sensenich 62/42.
Skyranger Swift aircraft.

The mechanics told me that they should use spark plugs manufactured in Brazil, which have different porcelain because the fuels in Latin America contain alcohols. I have not tried them yet.

Do you have any opinion on what I comment?
Thank You!

Hi!

That's a new one to me I'm afraid. I have not heard of issues like that. Spark plugs are not usually affected by alcohol... Are the plug gaps changing? Can you see any visible damage to the short-circuited plugs?

Local knowledge is a good thing. I suggest you try putting 1 local plug and 1 import in each cylinder and see if there is any difference in performance.

Let me know how you go!
Regards,
Doug.

I've been running the NGK irridium plugs for 300+hrs, use avgas. No issues at all
