Got a Storch HS with a 2200 engine ser.no. 2637.
FlySynthesis made a special steel breather bottle. It has got a oil return line out of the bottom leading back to the dip stick tube just over the bottom of that tube. The breather hose from the bottle goes out at the bottom of the fire wall.
Recently I noticed the belly of my plane was oily after each flight and had to be cleaned. Starting to worry that the engine was sick, but the oil consumption was unchanged. Then I discovered that the previous owner apparently had plugged the oil return line. So the oil mess was due to the bottle now being full and overflowing during flight.
I emptied the breather bottle and removed the plug in the return hose. Then installed a second breather bottle on the breather hose to see if oil was still coming out. Now no oil to see, but just one or two milliliter of water. So all oil from the breather bottle is going back in the engine as intended.
Now. What is your opinion about leading oil from the breather bottle back to the engine? I know this is not Jabiru standard, but I prefer to keep up the oil level during flight, and change oil a bit more often if needed.
The oil consumption so far has been approx 1/4 qts per 25-30 hours, which should be good.

By the way. Jabiru writes in various documents that the oil volume of a J2200 is 2.1 liter or 2.0 quarts.
Must be opposite since one quart is only 0.946 liter. Please correct this...

Personally I've no objection to the oil bottle feeding back into the engine, provided it all stays clean. If you're changing the oil regularly it should be fine.
Ah, well there are quarts and then there are quarts (UK and US quarts). 1 UK qt = 1.13652 litres. 1 US qt = 0.946 litres. I was involved in the design of the oil tank for a turbine aircraft once where we had to re-work it at the 11th hour because of the difference between UK and US quarts!
I'll pass on the word re clarifying which is which on those documents.

Thanks Doug. And appologies. I took it for granted it is a US quart referred to.
When changing oil my engine will not take much more than 2 US quarts, so that also made me conclude the units in the documents are wrong.
Anyway. The dip stick reading is what counts at the end of the day.
