Jabiru Calypso (J120) max weight questions (US)2 years 2 months ago#183

I recently purchase a Calypso 3300 in the US. It is registered an Experimental and looking at the specs for this aircraft it appears (at least to me) that this airframe may be limited to 1100 max gross to meet the stall requirements of the Light Sport Aircraft rules. I was wondering if it would be possible (or wise) to utilize vortex generators to knock a few knots off the stall speed and increase the max gross weight to closer to the 1320 max in the US? Thanks |

I would like to talk to someone who was
ultimately successful in increasing the gross weight of the Jabiru Calipso ( J120)
Doug,
There appears to be a few Calypso 3300 registered in Canada with a gross weight of 558kg (1230 lbs). But in the U.S. the Calypso 3300 seems limited to just over 1100 lbs. Is there an explanation for the difference in registering these same composite frames differently in both countries? The Canadian Calypsos suggest at least increasing the gross weight to 1230 lbs is possible. Perhaps there are known issues that now prevent Calypso gross weight up to 1230 lbs?
Any information is much appreciated.
Thank you
In the USA. Experimental built.
Jabiru Calypso-6. Serial#612. 3300 engine. EmptyWt 718lbs.
Gross Weight 1103 lbs.
