Wing fuel tanks

When filling the wing tanks on J160C, how close to the top of the tank is the full level to give 135L.

Hi Stephen,
You'll need to fill them to the top to get the full 135L. I'd recommend only doing that just before you take-off as leaving an aircraft overnight or for a few days with brimming tanks (no air in the tank) can sometimes cause issues such as the fuel expanding and dribbling out the vents. If the aircraft is not sitting perfectly level you can also cross feed fuel and lose some that way.

Doug..........using BP ultimate 98 going to cause issues with hoses...tanks etc, 2007, 160C

Hi Russ,
We've had a few aircraft end up with leaky wing tanks after using MOGAS, including BP fuels. I've no hard data to say that BP Ultimate is any better or worse than the others however.

Ok....POH and other documents state using mogas is "approved" ( 95 min, no adatives / ethonol etc etc ) So if a failure occurs in the tanks, or header tank.............what's the "fix" when the damage has been done, and what redress from factory.
In my case 500+ hrs on avgas, never had an issue of a petrol stinking cockpit, But one off 80 litres of 95, smells terrible in the cockpit.
Lastly........have i now set in place a situation of a serious problem that will bite me further down the track.

Hi Russ,
Your best bet is to have a read of JSL007: jabiru.net.au/Service%20Bulletins/Engine...-6_Fuel_Guidance.pdf 
MOGAS is approved, but it's important to realise the quality and chemical differences between it and AVGAS. We recommend using AVGAS wherever possible for those reasons.

MOGAS can have a lot more volatiles than AVGAS which can make it stink even when there's no leak but fumes in the cabin are a bad sign. If you look at the airframe technical manual you'll find there's a life on the flexible lines: assuming they're getting on in years a bit a thorough inspection of the system at the least would be a good idea.
