Hi Guys, I have a 2001 SP470 with a 2200 engine. With the trim pulled all the way back to the nose up stopper the slowest airspeed themaircraft can maintain is about 80knots. This means I'm having to use a fair amount of back pressure on the stick during a steep climb out and when I'm targeting 60knots on finals. Any thoughts? Is the trim system adjustable?

G'day Barton,
The trim on your aircraft is certainly adjustable. If you have a look at Figure 134 of the current J-Series Technical Manual (JTM001-6) you will see, at the close end of the rod a cotter pin labelled item 23. The system in your aircraft may not be identical but should be similar enough. There are a series of holes at both the front and rear cotter pins and you can move the pin as you need to change the spring preload on the system - this should let you tune the trim as needed. If you move the front cotter pin aft it should give you a little more nose-up trim.
Doug.

Is this adjustability also available on 2005 Calypso kit?

Yes the trim system has always been basically universal between the models. In the detail your 2005 version will be a little different to the earlier versions but the same in principle.

Thanks for the info Doug, it's greatly appreciated. I had a look at the trim system yesterday and I have a concern. When the elevator is pushed by hand into the full up position the forward spring is pretty much fully compressed. So if I was to reduced the amount of space available on the rod for the spring I'm concerned that the spring will reach it's maximum compression before the elevator reaches full up and thus restricting the full movement of the elevator. Which could be a problem when flaring the aircraft. Any thoughts? Ive attached a photo.

G'day Barton,
Thanks for the photo... Looks to me like I had a typo on my original reply: seems that you would need to move the rear cotter pin forward (compress the rear spring) for more nose up, not the front. Too much coffee that day, or not enough.

If that fails there are other things to try but give that a run first.
D.

PS: A rule of thumb for when you're adjusting this: With trim lever in the fully forward position the control column should be hard on the front stopper, With the trim lever in the fully aft position the control column should be vertical.
