WHEN I RUN NORMAL RPMS (NOT IDLE, BUT NORMAL OPERATION) MY VOLTAGE REGULATOR ALLOWS THE VOLTAGE TO RUN ABOVE 15 VOLTS. IT USED TO ONLY GO TO 14.5. IF I TURN OFF HIGH CURRENT EQUIPMENT LIKE MY LANDING LIGHT AND AUTOPILOT, IT WILL GO HIGHER THAN THAT, BUT I DON'T DARE LET THAT HAPPEN.

HOW CAN I TEST THE REGULATOR, OR DOES THIS ALREADY PROVE ITS TOAST!

Hi Michael,
Very good idea to keep the landing light etc on to keep the voltage down a bit.
There are a couple of things to look at.. First would be to check over all the connections to the regular, particularly looking for corrosion in any of the plugs. It's not a bad idea to check the continuity / quality of the connection between the regulator and the power bus. Dodgy connections can confuse the regulator and send the voltage up.
If all that checks out ok let me know and we'll start looking deeper.
Regards,
Doug.

Hi Doug / Michael

I recently had the same problem as Michael with volts going as high as 16. I've done the mod on the stator and the regulator seemed to do it's job fine by keeping the volt constant at 14.6v.

Doug can you perhaps be more specific regarding the connections that needs to be checked? Obviously one would start with the connections at the regulator, but whereto after that?

Regards

Ps- second post, first went missing

Hi jaco,
Apologies for the delayed reply...
The connections on the regulator plug for starters... From there you have to go a bit more freestyle, just generally checking the system. You're looking for corrosion, loose connectors etc. But obviously there's a point of diminishing returns where an internal regulator issue becomes more likely.
As a work-around (assuming it's in an experimental category) you can look at fitting a crowbar circuit to prevent damaging spikes)... Or a replacement regulator.
Regards,
Doug.

Hi...many electronic designs require more than one voltage rail for different portions of a system. For example, one might have a higher voltage motor which is controlled by lower voltage electronics. In such a system, it is most convenient to supply the overall system with the highest voltage required, and then step that voltage down to a lower voltage rail for the control electronics.
