HI
I have a J170 UL for 7 years and it has provided many good hours in the air. I have a question about the engine s/n. 2947.

In manual page 63 about lubrication of the rear cam shaft bearing is recommended that if there is no oil channel for this bearing it needs to needs be modified. It is not appears in the manual whether my engine have this lubrication channel or not.

So my Q is: By which s / n, was this modification introduced?

Hi Henrik,
I'll look up the answer to that one and get back to you.
Meantime, the recommendation is that if you have the engine apart for another reason and your cases don't have the oil gallery then it should be added. But it isn't something that you need to specially pull the engine apart for.
Regards,
Doug.

Hi
I am taking my 2200 apart to make the oil gallery to the cam,( it has run 380 hours and has a no god sound from the cam) I have seen one with about 600 hours with very worn out cam berings.
Is there a photo or draving that is showing how it is done, the milling i mean. There must be some mesures on the oil gallery to the cam.
Serial 22A2339

Hi Soren,
There's not really a formal method. Page 63 of the current Overhaul Manual shows how they look when they're done by the machine - basically you want to make yours look as much like that as possible. The normal method is to put a small burr in a die grinder or - better yet - a Dremel and carve that gallery by hand. If you have access to a mill then that will do a nicer job but hand-carving works fine. You just need to take care not to damage the mating face between the cases and it's good practice to remove any burrs or sharp edges.
Excess wear on those journals is a bit unusual. If you're seeing wear there it would be worth having a good check for case fretting etc while you have your engine apart.
Regards,
Doug.

Hi Doug -- Has there been movement on his question of which serial # was the start of oil gallery for this bearing? I have a 3300 s/n 615 (solid lifter); where can I find out if this gallery is in my engine?

Once again the engine gurus have come through for me:

Rear oil feed was introduced in the 2200’s from serial #3044 (was not there at all previous to this).
On the 3300’s, it was initially introduced towards the end of solid lifter production. It was not used on initial hydraulic lifter engines (starting from S/No. 961) but was re-introduced at S/No. 1850.

Regards,
Doug.
