Hi Doug,

It looks like I'll have to take my prop flange off to fix a small oil leak at the front crankshaft seal. The bolts are helt in place with Loctite 620 (essentially superglue). Very unfriendly stuff to work with, hard to check and hard to remove.

In the past, Loctite 620 was also used on flywheel bolts and through-bolts. I'm glad that Loctite 620 has been replaced with better options. On the Gen4 engines the flywheel bolts are kept in place with Nordlock washers instead.

Hence my question, would Nordlock washers rather than Loctite be acceptable for the prop flange bolts as well? That would make periodic torque checking and working on the seal a lot easier.

Hi Rob,
I ran this one by Rod and I'm afraid the answer is no: On paper the idea looks plausible and we may get there one day, but we have not tested the Nordlock washers in that application. It's something we might look at as time allows, but until we've got some experience and data we won't be approving or accepting them for the propeller flange application.

Rod also asked that I mention that... It’s very important the maintainer sticks strictly to the procedures outlined in the manual and does not use Loctite primer as it dramatically shortens the cure time. The bolts should be torqued quickly after the application of loctitie with no telephone calls during the procedure

Hope that helps clarify!

Regards,
Doug.
