Dear Doug:
I plan a flight of 600 km. My plane is an Skayranger Swift with Jabiru 2200 (s/n 3437) engine. I needs refueling during the trip. Usely I use MOGAS with 98 octanes, which is the remnant that will remain in the tanks. I will be refueling AVGAS 100LL. It can affect the engine to load AVGAS100LL at one time?
Congratulation on creating a Jabiru forum!!
Thank for yor help!
Sincerely
Miguel

Hi Miguel,
There's a few issues there and I'd recommend you have a careful read of JSL007-6, available from our website (jabiru.net.au/service/service-bulletins#engine ) if you have not already. Unfortunately fuel is not a simple thing anymore and it's really important for any operator to understand the issues.

Accepting all that and assuming it's a standard engine in a standard installation then swapping between AVGAS 100LL and MOGAS (95 RON) should not cause any major problems. You might find the engine a little harder to start in cold weather so it would be worth giving your battery etc a check-over if you're heading anywhere cold (there's a cold start checklist elsewhere on this forum too - jabiru.net.au/forum/engines/7-cold-starting ). Normal procedures for operating the engine apply.

During the change it sounds like you will be using a mix of AVGAS and MOGAS. That is not ideal and we always try to avoid it if we can. It's theoretically possible for bad things to happen (formation of gums which then block the filter for example) though I have not had anything like that reported to me (yet!). But that it why, if at all possible, I'd suggest that you run the tank low and drain out what is left to use in a different engine (car, lawnmower etc). But if mixing can't be avoided then make sure you run the tank as low as possible before adding the new fuel. And do the same when you swap back - the idea is to keep the fuel in your tank as "pure" as possible whether it's pure AVGAS or pure MOGAS.

Regards,
Doug.
